House Edmiston, Riebeek Kasteel

The house is designed for a young family of 4 on the edge of the town bordering the vineyards and surrounded by magnificent views of the valley.

The composition is that of a set of vernacular barn forms connected by flat roofs, with a deep North facing veranda wrapping around into a shallow veranda over the bedrooms. Entrance is between the main and secondary barn forms and the garage is the subordinate form linked with.

The Rooms all flow outside with wide foldaside and sliding doors that open up into pockets and deep thresholds onto the shaded screed stoeps green lawn and pool.

The main volume holds a guest bedoom mezzanine above the kitchen which overlooks the open plan living room, through the deeply shaded glazed gable to the wineyards beyond.

Interconnected sleeping decks in the childrens bedrooms are lit with south facing roof windows. Modest materials and finishes were used through out.
